Purpose

This leadership role will support the NA CSO and his staff in working cross functionally within HMNA and with external stakeholders to execute Hyundai’s vehicle safety, compliance, and security engineering.

  • Primary responsibility of department is to lead the Vehicle Safety Investigation team to track/manage/lead vehicle safety field issue investigation, research, development, and engineering efforts. This position will lead all NHTSA communication, discussion, and strategic plans on key investigations. This position will also collaborate with HMC, HAC and NHTSA on reviews, field data determination, technical understanding, and root cause investigation.
  • This position is responsible for effectively reporting and managing all aftersales vehicle safety quality issues to promote and achieve corporate and global goals in support of the overall company safety initiative, customer retention, sales plans, government compliance and customer satisfaction. 

Major Responsibilities

  • Leading the NA Safety Field Investigations team, managing and overseeing HR responsibilities within the team including hiring and expansion/growth.
  • Lead all Hyundai and Genesis internal vehicle safety investigations for Hyundai Motor North America
  • Lead the Technical Review Committee, promotion of safety investigation issues for review by the decision authority body for field action consideration, i.e. Safety & Non-Compliance Recalls, Service Campaigns, Extended Warranty, etc.
  • Collaborate with NA Safety Test Investigation Lab, HMG, HMC, HATCI, Manufacturing Plants, HAC, Suppliers, NHTSA on reviews, field data determination, technical understanding, root cause investigation.
  • Manage NHTSA correspondence for TREAD, formal investigation responses, recall submissions to the portal and support for recall execution.
  • Lead NHTSA communication, discussion, and strategic negotiations on key investigations.
  • Lead formation of the NHTSA ODI deep dive meetings which includes agenda, topic review, pre-review with CSO, HMC, etc. 
  • Lead monthly & or bi-monthly NHTSA ODI discussion and presentation.
  • Review and approve NHTSA ODI review submissions.
  • Oversee formal NHTSA investigation IR’s ensuring excellence and completeness.
  • Lead and oversee NHTSA communications with the Recall Management Division ensuring accuracy and completeness.

Major Responsibilities (continued)

  • Responsible and accountable for NHTSA submissions ensuring timeliness and accuracy including signed affidavits as appropriate.
  • Track, manage, and execute aftersales vehicle safety issues from investigation through decision and resolution per process and documented via case management database.
  • Manage / Lead Engineering & Legal third-party firms utilized in support of vehicle safety investigations.
  • Lead the follow up with HMC R&D, Quality, HMMA to drive issue resolution for the NA market.
  • Identify field requirements for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and assign review safety review and approval; ensuring Recall and Campaign TSBs are appropriate for the NA market, dealers and uphold effective vehicle remedies.
  • Support technical aspects of HMA parts department’s remanufactured products; primarily, remanufactured automatic transaxles, engines, and audio components.
  • Lead the decision/implementation process for conducting port/field investigations/actions by coordinating with warranty administration, Legal, Service Operations, Port QA, HATCI, NAQC, etc.
  • Active involvement with the Legal department in the direct interactions with government and regulatory organizations, promoting effective communication, information flow, transparency, and cooperation.
  • Provide technical support for the New Model, Port and Accessory QA group by directing engineers to participate in new model evaluations, ride and drives, port audits, accessory review and special projects.
  • Provide technical support to the Legal department attorneys and outside consultants for regulatory and product liability issues, Consumer Affairs Department, Parts Department, Customer Connect Department, Warranty Department, and Field / Region Staff
  • Effectively coach, counsel, and develop staff. Utilize the diverse talents of the staff by efficiently managing staff’s time, materials, and budget while focusing on the goals and vision of the company. Lead the development of all associated staff for the purpose of improved technical and problem-solving capability, career development and work group morale.
  • As needed, drive engineering fleet vehicles and/or company demo vehicles to monitor and clearly identify potential safety quality issues, JDPA IQS/VDS and CR Reliability (Durability) concerns and lead the group’s development of improvement and validation plans accordingly. Maintain product knowledge and gain customer/field issue complaint understanding. Evaluate, troubleshoot, and diagnose vehicle installed field failure parts. Confirm validation of vehicle failure countermeasures.

  • Approval for assigned cost centers budget expenditures.
  • Approval for assigned personnel expense reports.
  • Supervise staff in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Conduct interviews, hire new staff, and provide employee orientation.
  • Establish employee goals and conduct employee performance reviews.
  • Responsible for staff scheduling to include work assignments/rotations, employee training, employee vacations, employee breaks, and back-up for absent employees.
  • Assist staff to resolve complex or out of policy operation problems.
  • Responsible to meet department productivity and quality goals.

Education

~ Bachelor’s degree required.
~ Master’s degree a plus

Related Experience

  • Fifteen or more years of overall experience, of which at least five years are directly related experience in technical areas of the automobile business, with experience preferably in vehicle engineering analysis matters.
  • Five or more years of technical supervisory experience is required.

Skills/Knowledge

  • Thorough automotive technical knowledge required.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical/problem solving ability.
  • Strong data management/general and statistical analysis/reporting capabilities.
  • Strong organizational skills yet flexible to accomplish objectives that are often subject to change.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and direction.

$200,000.00 - $275,000.00 Annual
